When You Don't Know You Are a Pioneer

Dear reader,
Some of us remember when ATMs were a new idea. And when the latest and greatest iterations of i-phone began appearing. We had a choice and, in both cases, those who leapt off into the fray were pioneers willing to deal with the inevitable problems that came with something new. Pioneers just love new stuff.

However, sometimes the rest of us are pioneers without our knowledge. The US dietary guidelines established ~40 plus years ago are a good example of a grand experiment that has presented significant health problems, problems that we, the rank and file, are now coping with. Consequences like a pandemic of obesity and diabetes.

This article provides the background to the story, showing what happened when a decision was made for the public without understanding the cause of a problem and the consequences as seen in retrospect.

Going a bit further, this article suggests how the guidelines became a “thing we all accept,” despite the fact that we humans are usually a bit hard to push around. Another example of failure to identify the cause is included in the article, the prevention and treatment of Alzheimers dementia.

Just as was true with the dietary guidelines, this is what can happen when an Alzheimer's symptom is treated as the cause. Few are afraid of their diet but all are fearful of dementia.

I hope you will have the time to see how this information is important to your health.
